Celebrating the Women Who Shape Our Table
Celebrating the Women Who Shape Our Table
There is a woman behind this restaurant. Not just in spirit, but in stone and mortar.
Lilian Rice was one of California's first licensed female architects — a trailblazer who shaped the landscape of Rancho Santa Fe with her signature Spanish Colonial Revival style at a time when women rarely held a seat at any table, let alone a drafting one. When we named our restaurant in her honor, we made a quiet promise: that this would always be a place that celebrates women. The ones who came before us, the ones in our community today, and the ones still writing their stories. Everything at Lilian's — from the people we partner with to the food on your plate — is an extension of that promise.
From the Ground Up: Women Who Feed Us
Great food begins long before it reaches the kitchen. It begins in the earth, tended by people who care deeply about what they grow and why. Our partnership with Coastal Roots Farm, a beloved North County institution, brings the very best of each season to our kitchen — and it is a partnership shaped in no small part by the remarkable women who make up and support the Coastal Roots community.
From the farmers who cultivate the land to the advocates who champion sustainable agriculture in our region, women are at the heart of what makes this farm so special. When you taste the freshness in a dish at Lilian's, you are tasting that care. The farm-to-table connection isn't a marketing phrase for us — it is a daily conversation, a shared set of values, and a deep respect for the community that grows what we serve.
A Restaurant Built for Gathering
Lilian Rice designed spaces that invited people in. Her buildings were warm, human-scaled, and deeply connected to their surroundings — places where life was meant to be lived, not just admired. Lilian's the restaurant carries that same intention, and it is no coincidence that a space named for a pioneering woman feels most alive when the women in our community fill it.
We believe that gathering matters. That a long Sunday brunch with your mother, your daughters, your closest friends — surrounded by flowers, good wine, and food made with care — is not a luxury. It is how communities are built and how bonds are deepened. Whether it is a spontaneous weekday lunch, a celebratory Mother's Day brunch, or a quiet glass of wine at the bar at the end of a long week, Lilian's is designed to be your table. A place where the women in your life feel seen, celebrated, and deeply at home.
Mother's Day at Lilian's: A Morning She Won't Forget
This Mother's Day, Sunday May 10th, we are creating an experience worthy of every woman who makes your life beautiful. From 8am–3pm, join us for a special brunch featuring Chef Patrick's seasonal specials — including a Maine Lobster Mac & Cheese with Saffron-Aged Cheddar and Confit Fennel, and a Rose Mousse with Champagne Jelly and Fresh Berries that feels as celebratory as the day itself.
Every mother will be welcomed with a fresh flower upon arrival, and our bouquet-making station will be open throughout the morning so families can create a personalized floral arrangement to take home — a small, beautiful reminder of the day. It is the kind of detail that Lilian Rice herself might have appreciated: thoughtful, intentional, and rooted in the belief that beauty is worth making time for.
Reservations are recommended. We would love to save a table for the women in your life.
Beyond Mother's Day: Women at Our Table, Year-Round
The celebration of women at Lilian's does not begin and end in May. It is woven into the fabric of who we are — from the name above the door to the producers behind our menu to the neighbors we are proud to call our community. Lilian Rice built something that endured. The women of Coastal Roots Farm tend something that nourishes. And every woman who has ever gathered at this table has added something to the story of this place.
We are committed to being a space where women come together, connect, and feel celebrated in Rancho Santa Fe — and we are always looking for new ways to honor that. Here, every seat is a seat of honor.
