A Thanksgiving Dinner in Rancho Santa Fe: The Holiday Table at Lilian’s

There is a particular kind of quiet that settles over Rancho Santa Fe in late November. The eucalyptus smells sharper, the light turns golden earlier, and the village seems to slow down as the holiday approaches. For those of us in San Diego’s North County, it is the season for gathering, and this year we are setting the table for you at Lilian’s.

On Thursday, November 26, Lilian’s at The Inn at Rancho Santa Fe will serve a four-course Thanksgiving dinner, with seatings from 1 to 8 PM. Guests can dine inside or on our tented, covered patio. It is a way to enjoy the holiday without the shopping, the cooking or the cleanup. You arrive, settle in and let the evening unfold.

A Historic Setting for the Holiday

The Inn at Rancho Santa Fe has been welcoming guests since 1923, when it began as a guesthouse for some of the village’s earliest residents. Today, its Spanish Colonial character lives on in its courtyards, arches and warm, lived-in rooms. Lilian’s, the Inn’s signature restaurant, takes its name from the architect who shaped the look of Rancho Santa Fe, and it carries that same spirit of quiet elegance into every meal.

For a holiday that is all about tradition, there are few better places to spend it.

From the Kitchen

The Thanksgiving menu comes from the leads of Lilian’s kitchen, Chef Patrick Ponsaty and Chef Tony Torres. Together they have built a holiday menu that honors the classics while bringing seasonal flavors to each course.

How the Evening Begins

Dinner opens with warm bread service, followed by a first course of parsnip brown butter bisque finished with ancient grain granola and a touch of garam masala. It is a comforting start, a little earthy and a little sweet, with a hint of spice.

Next come the starters, served family-style for the table, which suits Thanksgiving well. Baked brie arrives with roasted persimmon and hot honey. A golden beet salad pairs herbed ricotta with chicory, upland cress, pistachio and a citrus vinaigrette. Duck prosciutto and pear salad comes with a pomegranate gastrique, and a crab croquette, made with crab and confit bacon, is served with a pickled root vegetable remoulade. Everyone can share a bit of everything while the conversation gets going.

The Main Event

For the entrée, each guest chooses one.

Traditionalists will find the full spread: carved turkey breast with whipped Yukon gold potatoes, creamed cornbread stuffing, a wild mushroom green bean casserole, turkey gravy and cranberry sauce. The same fixings come with a roasted New York striploin for those who prefer beef.

There are lighter and plant-forward options as well. The tapioca flour crusted California seabass comes with braised cabbage and a truffle nage, and the stuffed acorn squash is filled with roasted root vegetables, a citrus glaze and Israeli couscous. Gluten-free, vegetarian and vegan options are available, so every guest at the table has something to look forward to.

Something Sweet to Finish

No Thanksgiving ends without pie. Choose between a classic pumpkin pie with cinnamon chantilly, or a French apple pie with vanilla ice cream, salted caramel and candied pecans.
